The College English Teaching and Research Department under the School of Foreign Languages

The College English Teaching and Research Department under the School of Foreign Languages, Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) undertakes the teaching and research for non-English-major undergraduates in SWUPL. To cultivate excellent talents with an international vision, the department has adopted and innovated various English teaching modes, the classified cultivation mode, the network-based teaching mode, the legal English teaching mode, etc. The department has made immeasurable contributions to talent cultivation, international exchanges, and the development of law and other majors.

The faculty is currently composed of 38 instructors with an appropriate structure in age, educational background and academic title, including 1 professor, 6 associate professors, 29 lecturers; 5 with Ph.D. degrees, 6 studying as Ph.D. candidates, and most of them have overseas educational background or with visiting scholar experiences.

The department aims at the high-quality College English “Gold Course”. To the characteristics of the university’s academic disciplines and the actual needs of students, the department has implemented the classified cultivation mode for law majors and non-law majors. The university experimental classes are all offered with the Legal English courses. The department has also implemented a combined teaching mode based on classroom study and online learning. We have also successfully launched the network-based examination since 2018 with full coverage of oral exams since 2007. Besides, the department keeps exploring and innovating teaching modes, motivating teachers to improve their teaching skills, optimizing the College English curriculum modules, and striving to improve the quality of education.

Our students have achieved excellent results in the CET-4 and CET-6 examinations, ranking top among the universities in Chongqing. In addition to regular teaching tasks, the department also seeks to organize extracurricular activities for students; the faculty instructed the students to achieve remarkable results in various national English competitions and academic forums.

In recent years, the department has made outstanding achievements in teaching research and reform. In order to highlight the characteristics of the law discipline of our university, the department has introduced a series of courses related to legal English, produced New Horizon College English Reader and other textbooks. The faculty has undertaken several provincial and ministerial-level teaching research and reform projects, and has published several research papers in top academic journals both at home and abroad.
